Life of the Buddha

$3,800.00
The overall format of this piece is a classic example of a Kadhampa style Thangka. A central figure; here the enlightened Sakyamuni Buddha, dressed in brocade robes, seated on a lion throne in the earth touching position. The moment of enlightenment recalled in the depiction of the maras nearby in the background, full of movement and intention, rendered in depth and color.

A simple version of the life of Sakyamuni is depicted in the segments surrounding the central figure. These vignettes are divided into balanced geometric sections, with linear borders forming a frame to contain the images. In this way the eye can select a frame to focus on, and the details herein do not detract the eye from the central figure, but enhance it. It is this configuration, of the division of the scenes, and the very fine detail that defines this piece as a genuine Kadampa style.

Here the Buddha is rendered in 24 carat gold, unburnished, while the gold on brocade and jewelry details throughout are burnished, catching the light. The aura of the Buddha radiates outward in finely detailed segments. This level of detail depicts a highly refined space, illumined yet impenetrable.

The black background is another important detail of this style. It recedes and unifies the many rich colors used. From a distance the central figure stands out in its landscape of story, and up close, one will never tire of discovering the subtle details depicting the remarkable tale of a prince, renouncing his wealth and power to discover the path of liberation for all sentient beings. 35"x47". Radiant and huge.
