This classic representation of Jizō is crafted by a master carver in Bali using crocodile wood. As an interesting twist, the carver has provided us with two variations, one in a more traditional male form, the other as female. And why not?
Jizō (Dìzàng in Chinese, Kṣitigarbha in Sanskrit) is known as the protector of travelers, children, and others in need of protection. In Japanese culture, Jizō is venerated for looking after deceased children and even aborted fetuses.
