Benzaiten (Benten) is a Japanese deity that originated as the Hindu Saraswati. She is known in East Asian Buddhism as one of the Twenty-Four Protective Deities and, in Japan, as one of the the Seven Lucky Gods. She is associated with water, eloquence, music, learning, and prosperity, and she holds a biwa (lute). Her protection is invoked in some zen monasteries by the recitation of the Benzaiten Dharani.
This sculpture is made of zinc alloy and produced through metal casting in the tradition associated with Takaoka Dōki, a long-established metalworking lineage from Takaoka, Japan.
