Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Tathgata) is the historical Buddha. Shaka represents awakened understanding and the example of a life guided by insight. In this statue, the Buddha is displaying the Abhaya, or fearless, mudra with right palm extend outward and fingers pointing upwards.
The statue is carved from hinoki (Japanese cypress).
