Small Altar Cloth: Shibori - Indigo on linen.
Tenkozan: Made on the Mountain collection from the Monastery Stitchery and Dye Studio.
To show honor and respect, customarily, a beautiful textile is placed under statues, ritual objects, instruments or sacred texts. Altar cloths represent the sacred area of protection during liturgy and can also simply protect the surface of your altar table.
This altar cloth has been dyed with plant dyes that we grow, harvest and process right here on the mountain - in this case, indigo. Indigo has a rich history that spans the globe as people searched for a reliable blue color. We continue this tradition by growing our indigo in the dye garden up next to the orchard. Harvested in the last summer/early fall, we do all the processing right here in our dye studio. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that invites limitless possibilities for design and pattern through stitching, clamping and other resist techniques.
Like this one, all of our altar cloths are unique works of art made by the monastics and residents. We infuse every object with our practice and attention and are delighted to bring that care to your home altar.
This altar cloth is approx. 14" x 11" and is lined with a backing of organic linen. It is one-of-a-kind.
