Mahaprajapati, "Leader of the Great Assembly" was the Buddha's stepmother, the first ordained Buddhist nun, and the catalyst for the creation of the female order. She and 500 women were said to have donned the yellow robes of the Buddhist order and walk one hundred and fifty miles from Kapilavastu to Vaisali to request that the Buddha ordain them. Three times he denied their request, until Ananda, the Buddha's cousin and attendant, intervened on the women's behalf.

This ink drawing by Zen teacher Zuisei Goddard is based on a wooden altar statue that sits in the zendo at Zen Mountain Monastery. The image shows Mahaprajapati in the mudra of fearlessness and generosity.

Printed on 100% recycled paper.

5" wide x 7" high.
