Collection: John Daido Loori

John Daido Loori, Roshi (1931-2009) was the founder of Zen Mountain Monastery and the Mountains and Rivers Order, and served as the guiding teacher there for almost 30 years. A holder of the Soto and Rinzai Zen lineages, Daido Roshi drew on his background as a scientist, artist, naturalist, parent and Zen Priest to establish a uniquely American Zen Buddhist training center.

Daido Roshi established the Eight Gates of Zen, a unique program of Zen training for Western students. Based on the Buddha’s Eightfold Path, the Eight Gates of Zen is grounded in a dedication to the realization of the Buddha’s teachings and their functioning in the world. He wrote numerous books on every aspect of Zen Buddhist practice and training, from the precepts—or moral and ethical teachings—to liturgy, creativity, koan study, the environment, and most importantly—zazen. He also produced a number of video teachings about zazen, the establishment of the Mountains and Rivers Order, and the teachings of Master Dogen.

Here, you'll find all of his published teachings—books, audio teachings and videos—in one place.
