This unique statue of Jizō depicts the bodhisattva in seated meditation, demonstrating how one's sitting practice both prepares the heart for compassion and is compassion itself. Jizō (Dìzàng in Chinese, Kṣitigarbha in Sanskrit) is known as the protector of travelers, children, and others in need of protection. In Japanese culture, Jizō is venerated for looking after deceased children and even aborted fetuses.
